I pledge allegiance
to the Flag
of the United States of America

and to the Republic
for which it stands
one Nation,
Under God,
indivisible, with liberty
and justice for all

Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister and socialist, wrote the original Pledge in August 1892.  It read as follows: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."  In October of that year the word "to" was added  to read "...and to the Republic..."  In 1924, after the proposal of the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Pledge words were changed from "my Flag" ' to "the Flag of the United States of America."  In 1954, after a proposal by the Knights of Columbus, the words "under God" were added to the Pledge.
