Vintage Chart

Popular California Varietals
and Select Appellations of France and Italy

Note:  We will no longer update this Vintage Chart. Please bear in mind that so called Vintage Charts should not be employed as an absolute reference but simply as a general guide for the anticipated character expected from the wine.  Many appellations, or sub-appellations, are miles across and severe rains, winds, frost or drought  could damage a small area but leave the remainder of the appellation unharmed. Rainfall may have a significant influence on a vine located at the top or bottom of a hill.  In addition, not all vintners from the same appellation possess the same skills or macerate, ferment and age their wines in the same manner.  Vast differences may result.

I very seldom rely on vintage charts simply because there are too many appellations, too many  varietals and too many vineyards for me to remember. It is too big a nuisance to carry a chart similar to this and too many variables produced in each appellation. Vintage charts are not useless but should be used only with caution. - David
